England can’t qualify for the World Cup on Tuesday night but with a game in San Marino still to come next month, victory over Hungary at Wembley would all-but seal a place at Qatar 2022.
Once again, they are red-hot favourites to claim that win – 1/7 to be precise – and so this looks a game where the Bet Builder feature comes into its own as punters look to create a decent price for themselves.
First up, I’m happy to back England to cover a one-goal handicap, something they’ve managed to do in five of their seven qualifiers so far – only Poland have prevented them from landing this bet in Group I.
It should be remembered that Hungary were beaten 4-0 by England in Budapest last month and they’ve since lost twice to Albania (without scoring) to leave their hopes of reaching the World Cup hanging by a thread.
Last month’s clash was actually goalless at half time but that second-half rout is a nod towards the second leg of our Bet Builder – England to win the second half.
As well as those four second-half goals in Hungary, Gareth Southgate’s men have netted six goals after the interval in their two matches against Andorra in the past couple of months, while seven of their 11 goals at Euro 2020 came after half time.
Going back a bit further, six of their eight games at Wembley last season (prior to the Euros) saw them win the second half.
The riskiest part of the treble is the final leg – Dominik Szoboszlai to have two or more shots.
It’s often the case that siding with a member of the opposition is the best way to bolster a price in an England game and Szoboszlai pumps the odds up to an attractive level here.
The RB Leipzig man is the star of this Hungary team and he will line up just behind the main striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation.
He’s caused plenty of problems from that area, landing the 2+ shots bet in 10 of his last 12 competitive internationals, including against England last month.
Crucially, he’s Hungary’s main free-kick taker and with the visitors likely to be on the back foot for much of the game, expect him to try his luck from any such set-piece situations.
Put the three legs together and you get a decent-looking price of 5/1.
