With four games to go in the Bundesliga season, there are still a number of unresolved issues, and two sides battling for a Europa League spot meet at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday in what promises to be a fascinating clash.
Sixth-placed Wolfsburg have the advantage with a four-point lead over Freiburg in eighth, but while they have been impressive on the road, Oliver Glasner’s side has struggled at home since the resumption, losing to Dortmund and Frankfurt.
The good news for Glasner is that Saturday’s opponents aren’t the best travellers, having won only won once on the road since September. But Freiburg have earned a string of draws away from the Schwarzwald-Stadion and underlined their ability with an impressive 1-0 win over Monchengladbach last time. They are capable of earning a point against a home side whose priority here will be avoiding defeat.
Newcastle Knights have been one of the surprise packages of the NRL season so far, but I think they may come up short this weekend.
The Knights are undefeated in four games and were once again impressive last weekend when they thrashed the Raiders, a result that confirmed they are genuine contenders for the top four this season.
But although the Storm have had a slow start to the campaign, they showed plenty of character to grind out a win over South Sydney last time out. Craig Bellamy’s side have the greater experience and the more impressive credentials and I’m backing them to assert themselves against the upstarts this weekend.
Rugby Union returns to New Zealand this weekend with the relaunched and reshuffled Super Rugby Aotearoa, and the ending of all social distancing restrictions in the country means a full house is expected at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
The home side go into this as underdogs, having finished bottom of the New Zealand conference in Super Rugby. They will be boosted by the signing of Nehe Milner-Skudder who will add both experience and attacking threat to their line-up, but that may not compensate for being outgunned up front by the Chiefs.
Warren Gatland’s side were in good form prior to the lockdown, and the break has enabled them to get a number of players fit, including key prop Nepo Laulala. Their pack is likely to dominate, and that should give the likes of Aaron Cruden the platform they need to orchestrate another win.
