This column has mentioned Omar Alderete on a couple of occasions in recent weeks but makes no apology for bringing up his name again.
As long as he’s being priced up at 12/5 to be shown a card, he simply has to be.
It’s fair to say it hasn’t been the easiest introduction to La Liga for the Paraguayan centre-back, who is on loan from Hertha Berlin this season.
He’s been carded in nine of his 14 starts so far and, not surprisingly, leads La Liga for cards received. It’s also worth noting that he’s picked up four cards in six internationals since June.
In this contest, Alderete will likely be up against Argentine centre forward Lucas Boye, a player who loves to run at defenders. Only three players in La Liga have attemped more dribbles per game than Boye so it’s not hard to see Alderete attracting the officials’ attention again.
Valencia also top the team cards table, again no surprise given Jose Bordalas took over in the summer. His Getafe team was consistently Spain’s dirtiest during his time in charge.
They head into this game on a run of just two wins in 12 and knowing that there will be a fan protest during this contest.
Elche are fairly prominent in that bad-discipline table, they’ve received the eighth-most yellow cards – while there’s also a strict referee in charge here with Santiago Jaime Latre’s yellows-per-game average of 5.88 being the third highest in La Liga this season.
All things considered, this game looks primed for cards with Alderete surely overpriced.
There’s clearly potential for cards-based Bet Builders and another player worth a mention is Toni Lato, the man set to replace the suspended Jose Gaya at left-back for the hosts.
He’s very much a back-up option and rarely starts. This season he’s started just three games, picking up a booking in one of them.
Look back further and you find another solid pattern for cards – in 20 La Liga starts over the past three-and-a-half seasons, he’s been carded on eight occasions.
He’s also at 12/5 for a card.
The double with Alderete pays just under 10/1 which looks worth chancing, although those prepared to stake more would do well to cover the singles – backing all three bets to level stakes would only require one to win to ensure a profit.
