Football Bet of the Day: Roots Hall rollercoaster

After a winning start to the week, Kev’s staying in England, and backing goals in the National League.

“Both defences have been leaking plenty of goals. Maidenhead have shipped 19 goals in the last five outings, including an extraordinary 7-4 defeat at Halifax.”

Basement battle to catch the eye

Southend United v Maidenhead United
Tuesday 07 December, 19:45

We kicked off the week in style, as our tip Boreham Wood thrashed local rivals St Albans 4-0 in the FA Cup, covering the Asian Handicap with room to spare. Supremacy is settled in that part of the Thameslink network, at least for now.

We stay in England, but switch our attention to league action. Southend United, in the Championship just a few years ago, have fallen into disrepair. The Essex club is fighting to stay in the National League, and many fans have become disillusioned with the way the club is run. The Shrimpers have big debts, and were threatened with a winding-up order last year. On the field, Southend have slipped into the National League dropzone.

Maidenhead United are just above Southend on goal difference, and they have collapsed spectacularly recently, and COVID-19 hasn’t helped. Two games (including this one) had to be rearranged because of positive tests, and when you look at the games United have played recently, it’s a grim sight. They have lost their last five in league and cup, conceding an eye-watering 19 goals in the process, including seven in a 7-4 defeat at Halifax Town in the FA Cup.

Southend aren’t attractively priced at 1.9110/11 in the Match Odds market, despite Maidenhead’s recent issues, but I do fancy goals here. Seven of Maidenhead’s last eight games have featured three goals or more, and although Southend’s attack has struggled, their poor defending has contributed to the fact that nine of their last 15 outings have seen an Over 2.5 Goals bet land.
