Tobias Gourlay’s in Ukraine for the day’s second most important football match involving a team called Arsenal
FC Arsenal Kyiv v Karpaty
Wednesday 15:00
Vitesse Arnhem’s remarkable scoring run came to an end in the Netherlands yesterday. Having averaged more than three goals a game at the Gelredome in 2019, the hosts were shut down by FC Utrecht, who won 2-0 on the night and left us a couple of goals short of our target.
Today we’ve come to Ukraine for one of three Premier League matches. Bottom-of-the-table Arsenal Kyiv host ninth-placed Karpaty Lviv and, with both teams having scored in each of their three previous meetings this season, we’re pulling for more goals this afternoon.
Despite sitting firmly in the bottom half of the 12-team table, Karpaty have scored more goals than anyone else outside the league’s top three. And only runaway leaders Shakhtar Donetsk have done better than the Lions’ 24 goals in 14 away matches. At the other end, however, 22 goals conceded across those games gives them one of the league’s worst defensive records. Nine of the 14 matches have produced Over 2.5 Goals, including eight of the most recent 10.
Arsenal Kyiv’s last home match brought a 3-3 draw with the side one place above them. Excluding games against the current top four, the Cannoneers have scored in 7/8 appearances at the Knyazha Arena this term. They have also conceded in 7/8 and we fancy today’s visitors to help them get this game up and over the goals line too.
