Serie A surprise package enjoy Champions League debut
Atalanta make their first ever Champions League appearance when they travel to Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday night.
The Italians recorded their highest ever finish in Serie A last season when ending up in third place, which saw them automatically qualify for the Champions League. Under the leadership of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, they have become a consistent force in Serie A, recording finishes of fourth and seventh before breaking into the top three last season.
Atalanta have made a bright start to the new campaign. Though they lost their only home match to Torino, they have won both of their away games in the league, defeating Genoa 2-1 over the weekend.
If Dinamo Zagreb have an advantage it is the extra preparation that they have had this season. The Croatian 1. NHL campaign is well underway, with Zagreb having played seven games (W5 D1 L1). They have also played an additional six games to reach the group stage, knocking out Saburtalo, Ferencvaros and Rosenborg over two-legged ties.
Zapata can’t stop scoring
Key to Atalanta’s success last season was the form of their striker Duvan Zapata. Currently at the club on a two-season loan from Sampdoria with an option to purchase, the Colombian international scored 28 goals in all competitions in his first season at the club.
It was only the fourth season in which the 28-year old had broken into double figures for goals and the first in which he’d reached the 20 goals barrier, so there was some reason to think that it might have been something of a fluke. Three goals in as many games this season, suggests it won’t be and you can back Zapata to add to his tally at [2.56].
