Atletico get chance for swift revenge against Juventus

Atletico Madrid and Juventus meet each other in the Champions League for the second successive season.

Last season it was Juventus that ultimately triumphed when the sides faced each other in the last-16. Atletico won the first-leg 2-0 at home, only for a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick in the second-leg to give Juventus a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Now they meet in Group D, with Atletico and Juve expected to claim the qualification spots ahead of Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow. Both suffered disappointing results over the weekend. Atletico lost their first game of the season away at Real Sociedad, which saw them move down to second in the La Liga table behind Sevilla.

Juventus drew 0-0 away at Fiorentina, to end their perfect start to the season, after two previous victories. They are now third in Serie A, two points adrift of the leaders Inter.

Back reliable defences to be on top

There has been a lot of change at Atletico over the summer, but they fundamentally remain a Diego Simeone team, built on defensive stability.

Their first two victories of the season were both 1-0. Since then they have conceded two goals in each of the last two outings, but knowing Simeone that will merely add to his desire for organisation against an opponent as good as Juventus.

Two of Atletico’s last three games have been goalless at half-time. With Saturday’s match between Fiorentina and Juventus having ended without a goal, odds of [2.5] for the 0-0 half-time score look big, in a game in which two of Europe’s best defences will be on display.
