The Daily Acca: A Europa League Special

The Europa League has Paul Robinson’s attentions today and Thursday’s edition of the Daily Acca starts at Ibrox. Here are his selections:

Gerrard’s side to get back on track

Bet 1: Back Rangers @ 1/1 – KO 20:00 BST

Rangers suffered only their second defeat of the season on Sunday as they fell to a surprise 1-0 loss at Livingston. They need to put that behind them pretty quickly though as they have a big Europa League game tonight, and then also take on Hearts at the weekend.

Steven Gerrard’s men opened up their Group G campaign with a very pleasing 2-2 draw at Villarreal – twice coming from behind. They won’t fear anyone in this competition this season, especially at Ibrox.

The visitors are Rapid Vienna, and they sit top of the group having beaten Spartak Moscow a fortnight ago. Things haven’t been going so well domestically however as since then they have lost both their league matches, and they have gone four without a victory.

Turks to prove too strong for Malmo

Bet 2: Back Besiktas @ 6/5 – KO 20:00 BST

The selection travel to Sweden this evening in the midst of a great run of form. They are six without defeat – four wins and two draws – and they won their opening Group I game by three goals to one.

Besiktas are a cut above Malmo FF and the Swedes are already on the back-foot having lost at Genk two weeks ago. They have hardly been in scintillating form in the Allsvenskan either as they have taken just one point from a possible six of late, and they failed to score in a home game on Sunday.

Marseille to be held in Cyprus

Bet 3: Back The Draw in Apollon v Marseille @ 27/10 – KO 20:00 BST

Group H didn’t start well for either of these two teams as they both lost and now can’t afford another defeat. Obviously a win would give the victor a huge boost, but I’m backing the draw.

The visitors are obviously the bigger club but they have now lost three of their last four outings in all competitions and are struggling for form.

Apollon have at least been winning domestically, and they were only narrowly defeated at Lazio in their opener – the final score was 2-1. They will have to be on their game tonight to get something out of it, but I fancy them to hold off the French side and take a point.
