Fantasy Premier League Week 2 Transfers & Tips: Mend(y)ing your team after week one

After seeing how some of the teams will shape up in GW1, Neil Monnery eyes up potential fantasy options ahead of the second week of Premier League action…

David Luiz – £5.5m. With Antonio Conte saying arrivederci in the summer, it looks as if the Brazilian centre-back has returned to the first team equation. Priced under many other defenders at top clubs, Luiz is a smart play.

Eight to like

Benjamin Mendy – £6.1m. After an injury-ravaged first season in Manchester, the French left-back looks set to be a star man in both the real world and the fantasy realm. Two assists and a clean sheet on Sunday and plenty of touches in advanced positions. He is a strong buy now candidate for someone looking to buy a big priced defender.

Bernardo Silva – £7.5m. Sticking with Manchester City, the tea leaves seem to suggest that the former Monaco man has elevated himself in Pep’s eyes. A goal and an impressive performance opens the door to a surprisingly cheap, regular source of fantasy points. The Citizens don’t play an expected top six club until October.

Following the news of Kevin De Bruyne’s injury, Manchester City midfielders are a safer fantasy pick going forward.

Richarlison – £6.6m. When I wrote my season preview for midfielders, I scribbled the following on the new Everton man:

Everton have spent an inordinate amount of money to reunite Marco Silva with Richarlison. When the two of them were together at Watford, they were fantasy gold. If they can recreate that magic then at £6.5m, it is a slam dunk.

Well two goals on his debut suggests that maybe the old chemistry is still there. The Brazilian is a doubt with a calf injury so monitor his status closely but if he’s fit, Southampton at home is not scary.

Richarlison is available at 7/1 to score first in Everton v Southampton (Sportsbook)

Lucas Moura – £7.0m. This is a very similar tale to Bernardo Silva, who I’ve already referenced. With Son away on Asian Cup duties, if you have the chance to pick an attacking midfielder from the likes of Man City, Spurs or Liverpool at a middle of the pack price, it is a good move. Fulham at home on Saturday is a good match-up.

Demarai Gray – £5.5m. One of my long-term perennial teases. Every time I watch him play, he looks like a potential threat in the attacking third. At Old Trafford on opening night, the 22 year-old once more showed that there is something about him. At such a cheap price, the former Birmingham man is a real option for that bench midfielder depending on weekly opponent. On Saturday Leicester entertain Wolves. Looks enticing to me.

Demarai Grey is available at 9/1 to score first in Leicester City v Wolves (Sportsbook)

David Luiz – £5.5m. With Antonio Conte saying arrivederci in the summer, it looks as if the Brazilian centre-back has returned to the first team equation. Priced under many other defenders at top clubs, Luiz is a smart play. Arsenal at home on Saturday teatime isn’t half as scary as it was five years ago.

Callum Wilson – £6.0m. At some point earlier this year, maybe February or March, some newspaper people were talking about Callum Wilson for the England World Cup squad. That fad ended but for fantasy purposes, don’t sleep on the Bournemouth striker. Most managers need a cheap third option and he’s a great bet. West Ham away this week and their recent home record is not strong.

Callum Wilson is available at 5/1 to score first in West Ham v Bournemouth (Sportsbook)

Victor Lindelöf – £5.0m. Another pure value pick but if the Swedish international continues to keep a starting job at the heart of Manchester United’s defence, then look at him closely. I thought he looked good enough alongside Eric Bailly (£5.5m) against Leicester. With only 1.4% of teams selecting him, that seems way too low.

Two to avoid

Luke Shaw – £5.1m. By Saturday, he’ll be the darling of the fantasy world as people think he’s finally cracked it. Having broken his United scoring duck, the future is surely rosy? I’d pump on the brakes if I were you. Who out there would be shocked if Ashley Young doesn’t start on Sunday? Exactly.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 7.0m. Going into the season I had a mild liking for the Arsenal man at such a reasonable price. Having watched his performance against Manchester City on Sunday, it is fair to say my opinion has gone rapidly downhill. 12.6% of teams have selected him, that will surely go down imminently. Chelsea away on Saturday doesn’t exactly help his cause.

Captain’s pick

Manchester City face Huddersfield at home on Sunday and if you pick the right man in light blue, you could nab yourself a nice haul of points. Aguero and Sterling both look tempting. Liverpool’s front three are still dynamite and Spurs at home to Fulham is a shining beacon calling Harry Kane’s name.
