Times sports journalist Bill Edgar is back with another sideways look at some of this weekend’s leading fixtures…
“English champions in 1962 and top-six finishers in the top division nine times in ten seasons under Bobby Robson from 1972 to 1982, Ipswich have been stuck in the second tier for 17 seasons, and their fans may fear their belated next move of division is downwards. Only [1.86] Rotherham are a shorter price than [2.46] Ipswich in Betfair’s Relegation market.”
Welbeck on the comeback?
Danny Welbeck must hope his late goal in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday will earn him more time on the pitch. In the Premier League and international football over the past year he has been given a full 90 minutes only three times. The striker’s career has stagnated – partly because of injury – in the four years since he left Manchester United.
Arsenal anytime goalscorer odds away to Cardiff City on Sunday:
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 8-13
Alexandre Lacazette 10-11
Danny Welbeck 17-10
Henrikh Mkhitaryan 17-10
Tractor Boys stall
Ipswich Town have not finished as low as the bottom six of the second tier for more than 60 years but they occupy the foot of the Championship table ahead of Sunday’s East Anglian derby at home to Norwich City. English champions in 1962 and top-six finishers in the top division nine times in ten seasons under Bobby Robson from 1972 to 1982, they have been stuck in the second tier for 17 seasons, and their fans may fear their belated next move of division is downwards. Ipswich are rated a [2.98] chance to beat Norwich on the Betfair Exchange, and are even shorter to suffer relegation at season’s end, only [1.86] Rotherham a shorter price than [2.46] Ipswich.
Gerrard aims to bridge Glasgow gap
Rangers visit Celtic on Sunday knowing they face a huge task in taking the league trophy across Glasgow from Celtic Park to Ibrox this season. Not only have Celtic won 13 league titles to Rangers’ five this century, including the past seven, but their winning margins have been enormous – ten of them by at least 15 points. Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side, a point behind Celtic in the table, are [5.4] outsiders on the Betfair Exchange to win his first Old Firm match. Celtic, who have already stumbled in the league after going undefeated in the last campaign, are [1.22] to win a 14th league title with Rangers their nearest challengers at [7.0] on the Exchange market.
