Newcastle United have confirmed caretaker manager John Carver and his assistant Steve Stone have left St James’ Park.

Reports were widespread on Tuesday that the pair hand parted company with the Magpies but it was only on Wednesday morning that they Premier League outfit made an official statement.

Carver helped Newcastle narrowly avoid relegation last term and, despite losing his position at his beloved club, he has wished the team all the best going into next term.

He said: “The fans and the region deserve a successful team and both myself and my support staff worked very hard with the squad that was available to us.

“I wish the club every success for the future and, steeled with the experience of the last six months, I am eager and ready for the next challenge.”

Former Derby County boss Steve McClaren is the current favourite to take up the position, having parted company with the Rams after missing out on the Championship playoffs.

Newcastle are 4.50 to be relegated from the Premier League next season.
