Football Bet of the Day: Volcano to go dormant

We’re heading to Colombia tonight, because Kevin Hatchard believes he’s found a team that shouldn’t be odds-on to win.

“Deportivo Pasto are yet to win a game in the league this season, and they haven’t won or even scored a goal in their last three meetings with Atletico Huila.”

Lay Deportivo Pasto at [1.65]

Visitors to spring a surprise

Deportivo Pasto v Atletico Huila
Tuesday 20 August, 20:00

A nasty start to the week for us in Sweden last night, as Ostersunds were crushed 4-1 by an Elfsborg side who hadn’t beaten them in three years. I shall have to rekindle my faith in the country by scoffing one of those Daim bar cakes they sell at Ikea.

We turn our attention to Colombia now, because there’s a top-level clash between Deportivo Pasto and Atletico Huila, and there seems to be little justification for the hosts to be odds-on for the win.

Deportivo, or The Volcanic Team as they are wonderfully known, are still looking for their first win of this league season. They have drawn four of their first five matches, and they haven’t won a league game since June. They have won just three of their last eight league matches at the Estadio Departamental Libertad.

Atletico Huila are a point better off than tonight’s opponents, and their only defeat came against the unbeaten Atletico Nacional. If we stretch back into last season, they have lost just three of their last eight away matches.

Both of these teams are in underwhelming form, but my argument would be that there isn’t much to choose between them, and on that basis there’s little justification for the hosts to be as short at [1.65] for the win. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Atletico are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Deportivo, and haven’t even conceded a goal in any of those matches.
