Manchester City are [1.5] to become only the second team (the other was Manchester United) to win three Premier League titles in a row. The only team Exchange bettors are heavily backing to challenge Pep Guardiola’s men are Liverpool [4.2]. The Reds missed out by one point last season so will they be driven to finish the job this season or demoralized at having failed to seal the deal when it was within their grasp?
Tottenham [22.0] are next in the betting followed by >Chelsea [46.0], Manchester United [55.0] and Arsenal [75.0], so bettors anticipate the Reds and Sky Blues will be locked in another two horse title race.
If City and Liverpool are destined to occupy the top two spots which teams will join them in the all-important top four? Spurs are [1.58] to finish the Champions League spots for the fifth successive season, while Manchester United [2.32] are expected to return, having missed out last season. Chelsea are [2.44] and Arsenal [2.5].
After that, there’s a predictable lengthening in odds with Leicester [15.0] rated most likely to crash the top four. They’re followed by Everton [15.5] and Wolves [15.5].
Perhaps it’s asking a lot for any team to crash the top four this season. But several clubs look well-equipped to mount a serious assault on the top six. Everton [4.5] have been making shrewd signings as Marco Silva prepares for his second season in charge, while Wolves [5.3] have added more quality to their talented squad and should continue to trouble the top teams.
Leicester [4.7], meanwhile, under Brendan Rodgers are rejuvenated and look set for their best season since they won the damn thing, with or without Harry Maguire in defence. Even West Ham [12.5] are worth keeping an eye on.
Last season, two out of three promoted sides were relegated from the Premier League. This term, Norwich [2.1], Sheffield United [1.74] and Aston Villa [3.3] will be desperate to avoid the same fate. Is it name recognition – big club pedigree – that leads bettors to think Villa have a better chance of survival than the Blades or Canaries?
Based on what they achieved against the odds in last season’s Championship, both those teams could surprise a few people. Meanwhile, Brighton [2.8] and Newcastle [3.25] both start the season under new management and with fans braced for a tough 10 months.
Harry Kane is [5.2] to be top goalscorer but, while all England fans will want to see the Spurs man stay fit, question marks remain around whether he will avoid injury. If Kane does misses several weeks of the season, as he did in the previous campaign, it might pay to look elsewhere.
Mo Salah [7.0] is next in the betting, followed by Sergio Aguero [8.0] and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang [8.8]. Fancy an outside bet? Betfair Ambassador Rivaldo says in his latest column for the Betfair that, following an impressive Copa America, Gabriel Jesus [30.0] could come good for City this term.
