Sunday Sports Multiple: Back Algeria in a 3/1 weekend wager

Algeria progressed to the last sixteen of the Africa Cup of Nations with a perfect record, despite resting most of their first team for their final Group game against Tanzania, and they look a solid bet to progress on Sunday.

Possessing one of the deepest squads in the tournament, the Desert Foxes have the likes of Islam Slimani and Adam Ounas pushing for a starting place, while Riyad Mahrez, Yacine Brahimi and Sofiane Feghouli make them a potent attacking force.

Guinea will presumably adopt counter-attacking tactics here, but without their star man Naby Keita, I can’t see them making much headway against a well-organised Algerian defence. Back the favourites to go through with ease.

Both Elina Svitolina and Petra Martic have equalled their best ever Wimbledon performances by reaching the Fourth Round, but I will be backing the Ukrainian star to break new ground and make the Quarter-Finals on Sunday.

Martic has shown plenty of resilience to get to this stage, with all of her matches going to three sets, and she has a reasonable record on grass.

But Svitolina, who is ranked 17 places higher than Martic, has the clear edge on her rival, having won their last three encounters. Essentially a defensive baseliner, her speed around the court and vastly improved serve has made her an effective grass-court player and she should prove too strong for Martic on Sunday.

Brisbane Broncos were once again expected to be among the leading contenders in this year’s NRL, but a season that promised much has turned into a disaster and the Broncos go into Week 16 languishing two off the bottom of the ladder.

Their finals prospects haven’t completely vanished as they are only four points off the top eight, but this weekend they face another challenge with four first team players out on State of Origin duty and are up against a Sharks team that will be eager to put a surprise defeat to the Bulldogs behind them.

That was Cronulla’s second defeat in a row, but both were narrow losses, and after their sluggish display against Canterbury, coach John Morris will be demanding an improved effort as the regular season enters its final third. Against a weakened Broncos side struggling for form, they look a good bet for the win.
