Bill Edgar: Why City will win the title without conceding and goals will be scored at St Mary’s

It’s the final column of the season from our stats guru Bill Edgar and this week he’s telling us why Man City will win to nil and goals will be scored on the south coast…

“This Premier League season is about to become the first since 2010-11 without a game of nine goals or more. But there is often a glut of goals on the final day of the season, so if the nine-goal duck is to be broken, where might it happen? It’s a long shot, obviously – 80-1 with the Betfair Sportsbook – but perhaps Southampton v Huddersfield Town will reach that target of goals.”

City on trail to the title

A remarkable Premier League season draws to a close this weekend and it would be a surprise if leaders Manchester City were to fall behind away to Brighton & Hove Albion as they seek the win that will guarantee them the title, whatever Liverpool’s result at home to Wolves. City have trailed in only five league games this season, and in three of those it was for under 15 minutes. Pep Guardiola’s team are 15-8 with the Betfair Sportsbook to win by 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0, which seems a good price, given that they have won 11 of their past 16 league matches by one of those three scorelines.

Flood of goals on the coast

This Premier League season is about to become the first since 2010-11 without a game of nine goals or more. But there is often a glut of goals on the final day of the season, so if the nine-goal duck is to be broken, where might it happen? It’s a long shot, obviously – 80-1 with the Betfair Sportsbook – but perhaps Southampton v Huddersfield Town will reach that target of goals. Southampton will still be feeling the relief of avoiding relegation, and their fans will be in relaxed mood on what is forecast to be a sunny day on the south coast. Huddersfield’s supporters will also be in party mode for what could be their last Premier League match for many years.

Bayern are a match for the rest

Bayern Munich are on the brink of becoming – by one measure – as good as the rest of German football put together. They lead second-placed Borussia Dortmund by four points with two games to play and can win the league with a match to spare this weekend, which would leave them with 28 titles in the Bundesliga’s 56-year history – matching the 28 titles of all other German clubs combined over that time. Bayern play away to third-placed Leipzig, and it might be worth considering Serge Gnabry as a potential goalscorer. The former Arsenal forward has scored nine goals in his past 12 away games for Bayern and Germany, and is 15-8 with Betfair Sportsbook to score at any point of the match against Leipzig.
