It’s more EFL Cup action for Paul Robinson this evening and he’s expecting a mild upset at the City Ground. Here are his selections:
Another defeat for Newcastle
Bet 1: Back Nottingham Forest @ 2/1 – KO 19:45 BST
The hosts showed great spirit to come back from 2-0 behind at home to Birmingham on Saturday to draw 2-2. That was their fourth draw of the Championship season, with their other game resulting in a win.
Aitor Karanka was given plenty of funds to invest over the summer but it will take time for the new players to bed-in, so the fact that they are undefeated is a positive sign – even if they haven’t been winning regularly.
Rafa Benitez on the other hand was given little money over the summer and the players he did bring in didn’t get much of a chance in their opening two games – a 2-1 loss at home to Spurs and a 0-0 draw at Cardiff. A number of them were given their full debuts on Sunday against Chelsea, but they ended up losing 2-1, in a very defensive display.
There arguably won’t be much of a better time to play the Magpies, so with Forest available to back at 2/1, I’m keen to include them in the acca.
Mike Norman is also tipping an upset at the City Ground.
Fewer goals than expected at Goodison Park
Bet 2: Back Under 2.5 Goals in Everton v Rotherham @ 13/8 – KO 19:45 BST
According to the odds, plenty of goals are anticipated at Goodison Park this evening, with the majority coming from the home side. I’m not suggesting that this is going to be a bore-fest or anything like that, but under 2.5 is just too big at 13/8 to refuse.
The assumption is that Rotherham won’t get on the scoresheet tonight, and I’m inclined to agree. The Millers are new to the Championship following their promotion via the Play-offs, and they have played two and lost two on the road.
A 2-0 defeat at Elland Road is evidence that they can keep it relatively tight against an attacking side, and although all three of Everton’s matches this year have gone Over 2.5, they are yet to score more than twice themselves in a match themselves. It’s also worth noting that Richarlison is suspended, and he has netted three of their six goals.
Hornets to keep on winning
Bet 3: Back Watford @ 4/5 – KO 20:00 BST
Javi Gracia’s side have made a fantastic start to their season as Watford have played three and won three, to sit fourth in the Premier League. I am expecting some changes to their starting XI this evening, but I am of the opinion that the manager will still field a relatively strong team to keep the momentum going.
A trip to the Madejski shouldn’t phase the visitors as Reading have lost both of their league games there this year. Defeats to Derby and Bolton continued their poor home form from last year, and they have now won just four of 17 home competitive matches since the end of November 2017. Of note, Paul Clement has been in charge since March, so it’s not like he’s not had the time to turn it around.
